  1. Heat oven to 350 °F.
  2. Grease and flour two 8 or 9-inch round layer pans.
  3. Sift together flour, sugar, baking soda and salt into mixing bowl.
  4. Add shortening, ⅔ cup milk and vanilla.
  5. Beat vigorously for 2 minutes (300 strokes).
  6. You can use an electric mixer if you scrape the sides down often.
  7. Use medium speed.
  8. Add another ⅓ cup milk and eggs.
  9. Beat two minutes.
  10. Pour into prepared pan.
  11. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes.
  12. Cool.
  13. Finish with quick fudge icing or store bought chocolate frosting.
