The citrus fruits are semi-tropical fruits that are usually eaten raw without the peel. Shavings from the peel, called zest, are sometimes used in cooking. The juice has various uses, especially as a beverage.
Types of citrus fruit include:
- kumquat - often eaten whole, and somewhat frequently cooked
- orange - popular as juice, fresh fruit, and marmalade
- lemon - used for lemonade and to make foods sour
- lime - often substituted for lemon
- grapefruit - popular as a breakfast food
- tangerine - like an orange, but sweeter and easier to peel
- ugli fruit - like a huge and ugly tangerine
- pummelo - huge mild-tasting predecesor to the grapefruit
